Khim: Container Updates # 2

[Continued from last time]

I tried several more methods to experiment on more kinds of patterns (now involving colors as well):

I dipped 5.0 x 3.0 cm piece of Chan-Ooy into each liquid and keep them submerged for 26 hours.

And here are the results:

- For the second sample of coffee, I scratched the strip with dull cutter blades;

it gave out a crumbling effect.

I was initially planning to apply these methods into making bandages for the mummy mouse, but it turned out that the dried Chan-Ooy is not flexible enough to do multiple wrappings over the object, and happens to crack when I tried doing so. So this idea is dropped out.

I tried applying lotion to the Chan-Ooy piece as well;

Its skin slightly shines a bit, but no obvious changes has occured other than that.

However, yesterday, I managed to get hold of a sufficient supply of Korean Clay.

I would like to develop the tomb container a bit more, and instead of going back to do a similar tomb container, I decided to involve Chan-Ooy into this as well.

During the times I was waiting for Korean Clay to arrive, I discovered a Japanese Origami technique called "Tato". The completely folded piece of paper looks flat, however, when pulled, it expands into a "space", or more likely a box without a cover. I tried folding 3 of them using diffeent kinds of paper:

From left to right,

A4 Paper (cut into 15 x 15 cm.)

White Drawing Paper (cut into 30 x 30 cm.)

Chan-Ooy (cut into 30 x 30 cm.)

Chan-Ooy is a bit hard to deal with since you can't simply fold it down, but instead you'll have to slice lightly with a cutter knife to bend the paper into the desired direction. (After several failed attempts I managed to get its cutting pattern right, so the problem is now solved.)

This is how Tato works:

I plan to put the mouse inside (with the bandages, but as of now I haven't completed the bandages yet) and make a cover for it. However, the shapes would not be as shown. I'm thinking about making it a "flat touch pad" when folded (meaning that its outward appearance will look like a touch pad when remain flattened; this is done by additional attachments added to the Tato), and when you pull the tabs, it expands to show a blank space. The mouse would be placed there to imply that it has been "devoured" by the existence of the touch pad.

With the bandages, instead of using fabrics like the previous one, I plan to use this:

It's a printable transparent plastic sheet. Using a pen tablet, I will draw the mouse of the past (starting from the first one in 1964) and print them on the transparent sheet.

When overlapped, due to its transparency, the pictures will also overlap each other as well. This catastrophe shows that when the mouse dies, its history dies along with it; no one even minds what the mouse looks like in the past, thus the "messy overlapping history" that you couldn't even distinguish one from another, for no one cares about it anyway.

I've also made a combination of Koreasn Clay and Chan-Ooy Tato.

This one is made up of Chan-Ooy with Korean Clay applied on top of it for elasticity.

These are the ideas I've got so far.

There're several things I'm still not sure what I should do:

Should I use Korean Clay for the Touch pad Tato technique, or should I use Chan-Ooy?

And if I use Korean Clay, can I apply white Korean Clay for the patterns on top of it? Or is it better to keep its outward appearance plain and simple?

It was expected that the flood would arrive to my house. At the day I arrived (yesterday midnight) my family needed to change car to a bigger ones so that we could pass through the flood and reached home safely. The water on the road in front of my house's soi is now 20cm high and may increases everyday. Hope the situation will be fine soon, I want to go out and buy new sketchbook XP

 Here is the 1st sketch that I had drawn and made a mock-up last time.

 This sketch, I got the idea from spray bottle itself. The spray has 2 main parts which one of the parts is a container and 2 of them are connected by a plastic tube. So that the bigger part that attached to the bottle is acted like a (real) contained, and the smaller box is worked as a leaked-water receiver.

The mock-up is changed a little bit, from making hole at the side wall to the top instead.

The 2nd sketch is developed from the first one by removing the tube and letting the top of the container be receiver itself. What is special is the top-piece will slope down to a hole to let water run into it easier, and also enlarge it to be able to catch a possible water that may run under the handle.

 The 3rd sketch is also a continued work from 2nd sketch, by thinking of "...the leak of the container for the leak of container for the leak of the con..."

 It is, like, a 3-level of containers that contain the leak of the upper ones, from the spray (and sometimes its handle) to the 1st container to the 2nd container and then finally the 3rd container.

Progess

I tried making molds from the parts but the molds keep breaking. Its harder than with the fruits since the things are a lot smaller

I tried a new way of molding them, this seems to work

The second batch in making. Hopefully it will work?

I made a total of 14 molds that broke. I didn't really get a picture of them though..

"Chan-Ooy Edition"

I got the ideas from your last critique, so I look up 'planar surfaces', 'paper craftings', and got inspired by the Paper Zoo.

I thought that type of crafting could be interesting, so I try to create and develop different kind of textures on chan-ooy; this is what I have achieved so far:

First Row

1.) The first one was made using the dull end of the cutter blade. The texture is created by continuously scratching the chan-ooy's surface gently.

2.) The second one is made by bending the chan-ooy rapidly until a wavy, rough surface is created.

Second Row

3.) This one is made by submerging the chan-ooy strip into warm water, take it out to bend to create a wavy surface, then submerge it in water again.

It is left in the water for 30 minutes before it is taken out and left to dry.

4.) Using the same method as 3.), but during the process, thin layers of chan-ooys are ripped off of the main strip.

This creates a crispy strip of chan-ooy with a more detailed surface when dried.

The ripped-off pieces are also quite interesting; they're very thin, yet very crispy and not quite fragile.

5.) This strip of chan-ooy is simply submerged in water without any external changes applied to it.

The texture of chan-ooy paper became more visible and its shape is easier to be altered (eg. bending). However, the changes needs to be done before it is completely dry, otherwise the strip will become stiff again.

I'm thinking about creating my container using only Chan-ooy as the material. I'd like to try differentiating each part using the chan-ooy's textures, and apply several styles of crafting to different parts of the tomb.

For now, I tried starting off with the bottom layer using the first texture-technique.

More textures and crafting are coming by.

Also, I'm trying to make the mummy wrappings using chan-ooys instead of bandages.

...including some more experiments which is still going on.

And currently, I'm waiting for these strips to dry.

I'll see how they turned out and upload their pictures soon.

I decided to use only what I have for now, since the flood situation doesn't seem to get any better. My family might need to move out of the area, but we couldn't leave the house behind.

These 2 photos are taken yesterday. I couldn't go any further down the road; the river and the road have merged into one and it's becoming hard to distinguish them from one another.

The first and second pictures are drawings that will be minimized and put onto the black box.

I have about 6-7 more drawings similiar to these ones to do intoder to complete this inner box.

And I am working on the outer box after this.

Research:
According to your suggestion about the materials last time, I had found information about what is is, what is its final product looks like, and how do we make something from it.

Paraffin wax, as we use for last DTS1 molding does not seem to interest me. At the fact that we have used it once and I would be more appreciated if they are transparent.
(PS. I have just known that it is edible!!?)

Silicone; I expected it would be something like a soft jelly, but still stay in shape (as we always think of the silicone in bra or something like that XD) But as I found, people use it with plaster as a mold for resin. They said that it is just the same as rubber mold (it is a real name of rubber liquid) does but much better.

(I think Silicone is suited to your doll na Ally :D)

So, what I manage to use is, Resin or Polyester Resin: as its name it is a kind of plastic, normally come in form of a sticky clear liquid with strong smelling and it is poisonous. We need to mix the polyester resin and its hardener in order to change them into solid. The final product of it will be transparent unless we added some substances to colour it or even make it opaque white.

I have asked stationary shops and any hobby supply shops around my area, but couldn't find any. The shop owner said that they used to sell it but it is smell too bad and when it is left for a long time, it will be solidified and can not sell anymore. I will try looking in website if someone knows where I can buy it and if it is not flooding in that area.

Process:

By now, I was making a mock up by plasticine which will be use in molding plaster and then casting resin later.

I started with the base first..

,then smoothen them

make a hole for the tube (I am going to use the similar tube anyway, hope I can find one with same size..)

I also made an extension at its neck and these strips to help it holds itself on the spray bottle.

The mock up looks a bit rough here, but I believe that I can smooth the final object with sandpaper later :)


ps. My family is going to leave bangkok tomorrow morning (or today if the flood is coming faster than we expected) and will come back on this sunday if possible. I'm not sure whether I will able to connect internet or not, sorry about that. Please take care yourself :)

This is a coffin container which is basically the combination of thew mirror container and the grave container in the earlier post. This coffin container function as a stand for the mannequin, a storage box for the mannequin, and also a mirror for the mannequin.
However, i am stuck in my house due to the flood problem and i am unable to go out to buy stuff for making a prototype so i am sorry but i will try to find something with similiar function and used it as prototype while the flood is still high.
