The Human Map
By Alliya and Kanoon
The map expresses two aspects of the human body, the surface area and the depth of the body. The first aspect is presented through newspaper strips. Each strip represents the surface area of a certain part of the body and is laid out flat so that it can be fully viewed. The strips are placed around an outline of a body to show which part of the body the surface area was derived from; each newspaper strip varying in color to further define the part it represents.
The second aspect of the body that the map expresses is the depth. It presents this in the form of a shadowed contour map. The contour map is formed by shining a light from behind layers of newsprint. Each layer is a vertical cross section of the body. One layer represents the body mass at a 3cm internal. The different thickness of the types of paper in each layer causes a variation in the shadow produced, forming a shadowed contour map.
