for next project

First of all.... see today's wanderings and remembrance as a premonitory dream.....
We will come back to it - simply finish your sketches and notes this evening (wednesday) and bring them to me (in your sketchbooks - don't take them out) on Monday - about 5 for BACC and 5 for bobae market pier.
I am not so much interested in beautiful drawings but in the peculiarities you noticed, and the sense you made of them.

Reading space project
This project inscribes itself in continuity with the 2 previous ones...
Thus i will first ask you for Monday to continue developing your 2 and 3D diagrams according to the comments made earlier.
Then you will conceive a short story which could be done by hand/computer/watercolour/small models////any media of your liking - imagining your situation /etant donne by
.a reading subject...what can one read? (many more things than words)
.a collection of 100 units to be read (it could be an existing collection you know of)
.a relation to the ground (hanging, upside down, on piloti, anchored, underground, levitating, in outer space, in movement, floating, suspended, sliding, etc.)

All these have to be articulated to the story you chose, and/or the diagrams you made, and/or the theme you are now working on - no need for a direct relation to the original story but this step should be the pursuit of your exploration of one idea/theme/concept from last review... leading to a situation.

Make this as a draft of first ideas - on Monday we will do individual brainstorming so bring many elements and references - even contradicting ones - i do not ask for a definite choice --- not at all - but for an effervescence of drafted ideas to start working on.

review comments

Dears

I have made a summary of what each of you should remember from yesterday :

- Mew
Great work... but you have presentation skills to develop!! - both in your oral performance and in the way you (do not) explain your work and process graphically
the notion of an instrument - timing - performance
Look at the work of John Cage and La Monte Young
Also David Byrne - Playing the building

- Credit
Very interesting exploration - to be continued - as we said , you should move from purely representation to experience, experiments, mechanics, movements, machines, physical challenges, etc...
Have a look at Alfred Jarry’s “How to Construct a Time Machine”: A Web Guide
Explore the website and the different projects emerging from this original text by french genius writer Alfred Jarry.

- Woody
You have good ideas and enthusiasm it seems but... a methodology and rigour problem.
And your ideas highly suffer from it since they never get to be developed...
What you miss is a kind of persistence, of stubbornness - thus you will have to continue working on your tree of life diagram - go back to the diagram lecture i sent earlier - study 2 or 3 examples of complex (complex is different from complicated - it would be good for you to research what complex means) diagrams which attract you and follow a logic to improve yours - you need more data from the story - accurate, specific data and a process of articulating them.
As we said during the review, your 3d diagram could have been the plan and preparation of a series of operations on a living tree.

- Boy
Interesting work but be aware not to pretend doing something. Do it for real and create the appropriate conditions for it. You are allowed and encouraged to take more and more risks. And develop your personal exigency in your work.
Look at this artist's work : Carsten Holler

- Jane
Surprising work!...What we were discussing while you did not seem to understand was the awareness you had/had not over your own work : the way it looks, what it refers to, the imagination it triggers etc.
Basically it looked like an ugly funfair playground for english kids - which, if you are conscious of it and master this aesthetic, is a very interesting position to take and impose onto your audience....
It does not matter if you were not fully predicting this reaction and result, what matters is that you are able to reflect upon it now - write it down in your notebook for example.
As we said, you should rework on your "sections", and include the thinking process into them - scale of the body, adult/child, section through the imagination, process of exaggeration in a child's mind, etc. All with your piece as the setting.
An artist working on childhood, Mike Kelley (he just died...)
and one working on disturbing human scales... Ron Mueck.

- Po
You have the potential of a beautiful piece here. What was lacking is the information reference on the base plane, plus a way to interpret, to read this time/geo/eventscape, timo/topography
You should also talk with Boss and try together to understand what you are working on.... it is a very fascinating field you both stepped into!

- Jaa
Sorry but i could not let this pass unnoticed. It would be a lack of honesty and respect towards your firend's work... You might not have been aware of what you were doing, but at least let's hope you won't do this any more... Better now than later believe me.
So... go back to your own work, fight with it, take your responsibilities, and get to the level of your ambition and desire to succeed.

- Palm
No more nice work!... You are very talented but you now have to challenge yourself and wander out of the safe zone. That's the only way you will learn.
Don't be afraid of the ugly, the provocative, the unexpected, unforeseen,.... experiment!
Look for example at the architects Xefirotarch - you'll see how the ultra organic. to the point of disgust can be a matter to develop.
The process of crafting this pieces was the way to develop your idea - the wire structure is not to be hidden - it is as meaningful as the rest, go back to this experiment pieces, remember the discussion we had when you brought the sea plant...

- Pinky
What happened?? Were you scared of something?... You had a very interesting intuition, super challenging yes and very difficult to transform but YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE UP.
Well, i just hope you know it now.
And the wire structure could be the way to develop it - i have absolutely nothing against wire meshes (look what it means, especially in 3D modelling terms).
So go back to this cute game, understand its rules, extract them in a flowchart or other diagram of your choice (linked to yours would be best) and then write down the architecture of your game....

- Boon
Here also.... what happened?? It looks like you did not even really try. Come on! you have to fight with these material things that resist us. We all have to.
At some point then we can do magic with them - look at the work of Olafur Eliasson - he made several rainbow projects... and many more with light phenomenons.
And try again, and again, document it - make something out of it. Better an honest and rigorous and persistent failure, than a terrible plan B.

See you all tomorrow for a strange day i presume

Work in progress

How is it going for everyone? I would love to see your work in progress... For Monday bring your revised 2d diagram (plus earlier versions and sketches to show the process) Along with the 3d diagrams and a presentation of your process of thinking and making. In sketches, sketch models and photographs. The working process is what counts most for now. Bonne chance!

Woody's distorted map

Pinky's distorted map no.2

Boon's Map

I'm very sorry, about post this map so late. Here's the map about the type of building along my journey on Sukhumvit rd.

Palm's new distorted map

Credit's new distortion map

Mew's Map

Po's diagram

This is my diagram from the project before that i didn't upload before.

The following two diagram  is the recent project. The second diagram is the final distort map. The last diagram the diagram for the garden of time. If you have anything you want me to change, please do you

Thank you

another tree (trunc!) of life

may be inspiring for Woody and Pinky....

experimental(wirer maze)

this was just an experimental. And GOOD it WORK!!

references and reminder

Mew, Goethe in fact wrote (from german)
I call architecture petrified music. Really there is something in this : the tone of mind produced (suggested, proposed... one can make the translation vary) by architecture approaches the effect of music.

Palm, (re)look at the work of Sam Winston

Jane, find here different ways to make different spirals

Woody, have a look at tree art and grafting methods

For those wanting to work with monomaterial paper, have a look at the works of Richard Sweeney

Boon, different ways to make a rainbow at home..! i'm sure you can find more (test and document for wednesday)
plus some cartography of emotions

Credit search the general theory of relativity (schema, drawings and 3d model) for a start... and maybe then quantum physics representation of time... it should be highly inspiring!

And do not forget to send me your new illustrator maps tomorrow by 8 pm (sharp).

question-what to do

helloo.. i do have something to ask. I went around and asked my friends but I'm still not clear and really don't understand about what to do for the submission on Monday.

I know I slept in the morning class, I'm sorry. But i would appreciate a lot if you could explain to us again about what to submit on Monday and what and how to do.

and.. you told me about " do it in the computer" , my diagrams. so, I have questions, ermm... are we going to proceed on to the next project which is the "nine matrices" on this coming Monday?
for why do I need to do my diagram in the computer again?

the brief doesn't help but your reply would mean a lot to everyone, thank you.
