Khim: Final Project

Initial Ideas

A brief summary of the early ideas with photos that has not been uploaded onto the blog from previous entries

CONCEPT:

The mouse is "dying"
(losing its existence in terms of popularity)
due to the massive amount of people who turns to use touch pads

Mummy Mouse:

The idea of using the mouse's cord as the keeper of the cord itself by inserting the cord through an elongated piece of fabric and wrap it around the mouse.

The Mouse's Tomb:

The idea of keeping the Mummy Mouse within the Sarcophagus to imply the idea of "storing the mouse in parts" like how organs of the mummy are separated from its main body.

Your Life is In My Hand (Hand Mouse):

Two gloves glued together; enables the user to hold the mouse without grabbing it with their fingers. Designed to imply the idea that human hands can act as a container as well.
(Not Chosen to Be Developed)

Carry On:

Designed to show the positive side of the dying of the mouse.
(Not Chosen to Be Developed)

Prototypes Before the Final Container

1

The Hidden Mouse:

To imply the idea that the existence of the optical mouse has been completely devoured by touch pads; unless people were once again interested in the mouse and search for it, the mouse will remain hidden, like how the mouse cannot be seen unless the two sides of Chan-Ooy are intendedly pushed up to reveal the mouse which was hidden inside.

When pushed up

The Mouse Timeline:

Intended to be used instead of the fabric, but not flexible enough. Patterns drawn using Photoshop; printed on a clear plastic sheet.

Timeline of the mouse: 1964-1999

2

The Mouse Trap:

Literally "the mouse trap". Trying to express the idea that the real mouse is dying by getting trapped within the mouse's trap, and that the optical mouse is dying since it got trapped within the container that has various kinds of textures placed onto its surface (representing the "touches", and thus hinting the idea of touch pads) to imply how touch pads has completely devoured the optical mouse.

Textures made by scratching the surface of Chan-Ooys with a dull blade

Final Container

CONCEPT (Developed from Initial Ideas):

The container that can keep the mouse for the next 200 years.
Since the mouse might cease in existence, the purpose of this container is to be able to keep the mouse so that the future generations can discover and learn about the optical mouse, as well as develop it to be in use again or develop it further.

The container is designed to be flexible in shapes, and can be flipped and rotated into the least of 2 slots and the most of 4 slots. The purpose for this is so that the future generations will have a better understanding of the optical mouse by the way it is kept and by the number of parts it can be separated into.
[eg. 2 Slots, 2 Parts of the Mouse; 3 Slots, 3 Parts of the Mouse]

Acrylic covers are used to keep the container in a desired shape.

13 Pieces of Plaswood used in total;
Hinges are used as joints (stuck to the surface using hot glue)

Possible shapes the can be made: 2 Slots and 3 Slots

Possible shapes the can be made: 4 Slots;

All parts disassembled

Prototype: First try using Chan-Ooy

Object Scenerio

CONCEPT:

Bangkok 200 years later in a laboratory

4.5 Dimensional:

Since during the present time we are using 2-Ds and 3-Ds, I think it would be interesting if the future has (or might as well possibly, could) introduced 4.5-Ds, or even further, with functions such as being able to "grab 2-Ds image out from a flat surface into a 3-Ds object". The scenario shows the container with the optical mouse still residing inside, though with some cracks on the acrylic's surface due to its old age (the mouse is still safe; it has been protected and unharmed), lying alone on the floor since it is the only object that has not been upgraded or programmed into a 4.5-Ds. The container is in this futuristic laboratory, waiting to be analysed.

Additional Details:

The wall on the left shows flat images of test tubes aligned in two rows, with the last one hanging out alone as a 3-D object (it has been "pulled out").

Two longs tables are aligned next to each other; 1/4 of the table is in 2-D, while most of it hangs out as a 3-D object, and thus they produces shadows.

The arms coming out of the wall implies than humans have turned themselves into the programmed objects as well in order to use these convenient features

The view outside of the window shows how the inhabitants of human might be in 200 years later (all buildings constructed to rise high in this case to avoid problems such as flood); cables hanging out connecting from one buildings to another are intended for transferring energy.

Thank you for teaching us a lot of things this semester, Aj. Camillee.
I really want to a a photo with you and this group but I missed it on the last review...
(I didn't know we're going to take a group photo so I rush out since my father's car is already waiting in front of the faculty...I should have waited a little more)
But I enjoyed Design I / Design TS and learned a lot of things, so thank you very much!

  1. You should Photoshop yourself in the picture!

Enjoy the break and keep the excellent work up...
