Jaa's
I working on the details and texture that we talked about right now. I'm gonna show you tomorrow ka.

Pinky's
The idea is to make a continuous structure by using similar material; water bottles.
These are diagrams showing how I will put the bottles together to be part of the pier. From both of yours and aj. Nilay's comment is concerning of how can bottles stay strong and durable throughout many factors around the pier. I'm working on better joint than showing on these diagrams. So, the structure would give more interesting shape. I'll post any updates later and sorry for late post.
Palm's progress
The interaction of the people in the area with the old pier.
The interaction of people in the area with the new pier design.
The route of the boat passengers (section) (here I also adjust my pier to fit more within the site).
The plant growth, how the vegetable garden works.
water system, how I will filter the canal's water, and how they're used in the misting system.
More plates are coming as I'm currently working on the mechanism of the pier, the model is also under progress.
Po's progress
This two is a map of the tree in the area around the pier. One as a diagram and the other as a panoramic view. I'm working on the diagram of each tree.
I'm having a problem about the design. Since you mention to look at the position of the existing trees, but from what i see, there are no big trees around the pier, both side of the canal. The big tree are far away. Could you suggest a alternative for the design? Do you want me to plant new plants? and design from that, or something else.
jane's rhino
thanks for reminding me about the octopus form, at first i don't get why you want me to do it but i get it now, i forgot want i try to do at first and create something new. An octopus was just an inspiration, a form that suit to my project and will be easier for people to understand and be able to imagine how it will look like. So i go back and look at my old design, the ruby shape, i didn't like how it look that much, so i went on and research on "ellipsoid form", then i came out with this shape, which i think the shape fix the pier size.
So in this one the boat that for products will be on the left side and the people will be at the right (so that people dont have to walk farther.) The pier will be a translucent material so that people can see the inside (the product (belt) movement) while people inside can she the outside. there is also a second floor, people can get a better view on the second floor(might be useful to look at the boat when its coming..... and better view around the site)
what do you think about this? is it okay any suggestion? what should i do to improve it??
thanks,
credit progress
My new plan is to use hearing aid or ear trumpet as an idea of making a sound clearer so now i have an idea of a pier that uses a sound to make people who walks through it re-imagine the surrounding of the pier by using the sound from surrounding and crossing each other so that the experience of what people hear will not be the same as what they see.
So these are research and sketches i've made to redesign the new pier and i'm now in proress of making experimental model and i'll take picture as i make it and then i'll make more pages and post on the blog.

boy- old works
i rotated the image of the branches vertically and it seems better and easier to look at its structure.
here a new drawing. the front view shows the tree columns and if you look at the plan at the same time, the plan shows the position of those trees from the top view.
the section on the right shows the tree columns as well, about how it bends. but the left one is blocked by the stair case.
lastly, look at the drawing with the arrow and look very carefully at the tiny section on top as well. the balconies are extended as you see. from those seats, nothing will block people when they look down. and what they can see is the people who enter and exit the pier's gate.
and if you think of how it's arranged, i actually plan that the shadow on the floor with 3 balconies will lay over the balconies underneath. if you remember where the sun is.
...i didn't jump into this design right away, i have tried and sketched other ways of placing stairs and columns. but this is what i can think the best and maybe the best i can think.
just to let you know how my design is. if everything is okay, comment and assure me with confirmation. so, i can start to finish up the minimum requirements and begin my model. However, when i'm cutting the model, maybe i may have the idea on how to improve it even better..
review comments -----
First of all... congratulations for the presentation today!
As you may have observed you all have very interesting projects and now really need to push them forward...
Now - you have to take one day to sort out the group presentation documents if they are not completed yet... - as required in a previous post - and present parts of your analysis on the huge site model.
Please discuss this as a group and let me know how you will use the model.
personal project comments now...
Po
. work specifically on the plants - make section diagram of them and their requirements for growing (soil, sun, water, etc.)
. work on boats and people circulation from the bank to the water
. according to this, work in plan on the implantation (literally...) of the seeds/plants + their growth and evolution + the grafting possibilities
for this devise a strategy of points and possible connections instead of imposing a symmetrical shape which is surely non-realist and far less interesting
. work on grafting methods and really take care to explain the time your proposal will take to grow
You can really go wild with this grafting idea--- people have done a lot of crazy and ridiculous things with it!!
. start a model - either by growing or using plants - and/or by finding appropriate material behaving like small tree/branches - 1/100 showing all the territory of your proposal
Mew
. you are now focusing only on destruction so GO FOR IT!! do not be afraid of your ideas - push them to their limit, test them...
. research and test cardboard - think about fire prevention and waterproofing for some specific part of your structure - the destruction has to be designed
. find a stacking logic with an overdose of material at the starting point of your project, which will slowly burn of melt over the years
. work on a plausible timeline for the disappearance of your pier
. and work on the effect on people / the effect of people on this structure...
Credit
. really promising project as well but you need to simplify it in terms of circulation and sound interactions
. i think we discussed today quite clearly about the way to go - remember to look for references of these old fashion hearing aids
. start working on a physical model which you can audio test - you can start directly at 1/50
. work on perspective renderings which express the sound effects - it could be a series which you link to an audio file....
Boy
. design the vertical extension specifically instead of repeating the same floor over and over
. revise the structural continuity and develop it as a tree, as you had the intuition
. study thai design and ornaments through drawings and diagrams
. plan the restaurants in more details
. you could add another vertical access at least...
. work on the roof and overlapping, as in thai houses and temples
. start a model at 1/100
Woody
. focus on sun and rain with your inverted umbrella flowers
. study the mechanism of opening.closing of the moon flower - draw it - and start designing in detail your own version for a similar mechanism
. what fabric would you use - look at more examples of tensile structures - but look at them in detail, not as one picture from far away - you need to do a proper research!
. super important - work in plan the global organization and layout of these flowers according to the program (pier, circulation of people, etc.) tiling pentagons on 2d is impossible - study islamic patterns with pentagon
. start a model at 1/100 + one of the mechanics at the scale you think you need
Jane
. if you do not like the inspiration of the octopus, then develop your own aesthetics.... of course
. but what is super crucial now is to produce drawings at the right scale!!! work a lot to resolve your ideas in plan and in sections (2 sections)
. start a model at 1/100 to help your design process
.continue working on the perspective renderings
. the ex-tentacles / branches can be expressed diagrammatically on an axonometric drawing of the tower
Boon
. work on the drawings!!! by hand, by computer, as you want but print and draw on it, redraw, add details, never stop drawing! every line should be conscious and should have a reason to exist
. develop the roof or walls filtering station - link them to the coffee shop - design this coffee shop
. start a model at 1/100 to help you in the design process
. start perspective renderings of your project
Palm
. believe in your project and develop it with a real attention to the site and all will be fine for you - you have to fight for your ideas to come through and you have the skills and intelligence to do it... so go for it!!
. modify the fingers according to the island, to the implantation on both sides of the canal
. work on the expression of people circulation, water circulations, plant growth, mechanics and social interaction - this can be diagrammatic drawings
. your plans and sections should show movements, different configurations, people activating this fingers, plants growing (or dying if it does not work...), customers crossing (or lost on the island...), !!!
. start a model at 1/100 to test materials, mechanics and form
Jaa
. resolve this transformation from daytime pier to night-time vessel - is it by rotation?.. with the form you presented today, it would be quite logical
. take care that the pier can work as a pier! people need to be able to get on and off the public boat
. work out in plan the daytime pier and night-time vessel with details
. work them our in sections (for each you will need 2...)
. start a physical model at 1/100 to test mechanics of rotation, and other experimental models for texture
. continue working on the perspective rendering at night-time with the boat transforming, the boat near the theatre ... (+ at least one in daytime)
. really important is to work on the monstrous look of this vessel - its texture - but also its head and tail if it has....
Pinky
. start drawing at scale 1/50 the global organization of your pier in plan + its construction systems and components in 2 sections
. show the growth in times (several steps over the years and bottle consumption) - it can extend both in width and length but also in height and density (different light effects would be interesting to create denser shading in some areas)
. work on the sub-structure (meaning the skeleton here) of your pier - what is it made of and how does it work? is it elements in tension like cables or a net on which you can compose the plastic skin
. continue the physical experiments with plastic and if you choose to work with the lid, design an element on which you could screw several melted bottles
- start a 1/100 model of the island with possible growth....
. and continue the work on perspective renderings - they are really promising!

reminders - final submission requirements
For the final review on May 4th....
- Site analysis - group work
- Model at 1/200 - also to plan as a group
About this two we will talk on Monday and devise a strategy.
You need to bring all the group analysis done + plan your personal intervention on the group model : how to show your project at this scale, in the piece of city you modelled.
- Ground floor plan at 1/50 or larger (depending on the scale of your project + the level of detail you can achieve)
- 3 sections at 1/50 or larger (depending on the scale of your project + the level of detail you can achieve)
- 3 or more perspective views on A3 or larger
- other documents / diagrams / study models / ...
For Monday you have to start working on the plan and at least 1 section + perspective views.
In addition to study models, sketches, diagrams ... we discussed today.
Don't worry - you design will of course not be finished, the drawings will be sketchy... but that is good for this stage of the project.
But be precise in your intentions and your researches, and in the global organization in space and schedule of your project.
AND PLEASE PRINT ALL THESE DOCUMENTS FOR TUTORIALS - it is better for discussion
.......and good luck!

Idea for the pier
Dear A.Camille
I have been thinking about the vegetation, and i think that the plants and trees can be use to help clean the canal too, it might not be totally clean, but it could helps. So I want to use the properties that it circulate the air and the water, and trapping the trash to be part of the function the pier have to make the environment better. This could link to the transportation as the boat can be dragging the plant along and picking up the trash while the boat is going.

Jaa's project3 work
Hi! Aj. Camille, sorry I didn't come to class today.
I've been research about horror story in klong saen saeb. there are a few story but it all in thai so, if it necessary for the project i think i will draw it from the story that i read plus my imagination.
This is my DTS assignment. I will print it out for you next time ka.

pier project
From our discussion in studio last time, we have (summarized) :
Boy working on thieves and robbery - on the parcour from and to the pier, hiding places, the secret or non-obvious routes and strategies of invisibility
Boon on the water - need to analyse it - fauna and flora - case studies of water treatment systems
and the idea of mixing cultures by what they produce, here tea or coffee (specific drinks made from water)
Pinky on trash and garbage management - study of the existing, report and case studies of other examples - and inventive re-use
Palm on hydro-energy (great reference of the bottle-water-bleach) and the schedules of the community (children but not only...)
Woody on weather (sun, rain, tides.... all that could be used on this site) and eco-energies examples and case studies
Jane on transportation of goods (and people) from the pier to the tower - study of the needs according to the schedules and different destination - case studies of airport belts, roller-coasters, octopuses, ...
Po on the planted and wild vegetation on the site (and in water) - what grows, how, where, - generally in Bangkok - what could grow.... linked to transportation?...
Jaa on life from 6pm to 6am, activities and transport + the monster of the canal - who? why? drawings, stories...
Credit on noise and sounds - recording of the existing noise with map of their location, decibels, provenance, melody, repetition, rhythm, etc.
and Mew on night programs linked to Jaa's idea of transportation?... using the other canal?....
Now it seems that we could potentially link all these ideas into a proposal made of multiples and that could all use the huge site model as a working device and later on for representation.
...trajectories, maps of movement and/or dispersed activities are particularly interesting for this project.
We will see this on Wednesday after you each present the work you have done on your part.
Happy working holiday !

Hello all!
Can you show me anything of the drawings / models ?
Don't forget to develop your own personal approach to the site as well. And be adventurous with it!

about difference
You know, you did a very reamrquable exploration of the site.
Of its many neighborhoods and the scale was beyon comparison.
YOu also had a more human and percpetual / sensuous approach of the site...
Not so much functional or about data...
And this is not bad, not at all, on the contrary even!
Now you have to find a way to keep and express this approach, in the analysis first and then as a generative motor for you projects.
We will do it through the projects development as well...

site analysis + model + individual work
You have still a lot of work to do !
I think the best for you is to plan to finish group work by Sunday
and then do individual work on Monday and Tuesday
For the group work,
as we discussed yesterday, the most important thing now is to transform all you data and observations into drawings :
- big map to explain the site globally - this should be at 1/200 in order to prepare for model making
/ it will be huge but you should start it digitally from Bing Map view with all the shapes of the buildings.
You have to add the general information on it. + description of boundaries between the different sections.
- detailed close-up maps at 1/50 of the different neighbourhoods you studied / alternatively you could present this in axonometric view - this is actually necessary for Jane and Jaa (tower and floors)
add more detailed informations on these maps
- section through the canal at 1/50 - you need to know the shape and depth of the canal!
Continue the one started digitally, extend on both sides and add the background (tower, mosque, etc.)
- all these documents and details need to be coordinated in terms of colour and shape coding
- the panoramic views you did was a good start, but the information can also be added on the pictures and through drawings and sketches and not too much text
- drawings of the existing pier at 1/50
- drawings with informations - description about this pier
- drawings with informations about the water public transport and the users
- drawings with informations about the different transportations of people and of goods around the site
detail what is transported - from where? to where?
+ different types of vehicles
what is the journey of a cart?
does water transportation play a big role?
This site is a market (many markets..) we need to understand better how it is run...
- comparison of the different rhythms on this site (muslim daily rhythm, market and worker rhythm, day rhythm vs night rhythm, etc.)
--- anything else you planned ?
Post this work by Sunday on the blog - and in progress before that if you need help.
If you need you can also come here for tutorial...
- model at 1/200
here are instructions form Aj Nilay :
The idea was to have massing of the area around the site expressed in a similar format across sections for use throughout the design process, final review, and year end exhibition. The scale of each group model should be 1:200 and should cover at least 15,000 square meters (1.5 hectares) of the context. The minimum size model would be roughly equal to 2/3 of an A1 sheet. The shape of the area modeled is flexible but should not overlap with another section.
Each model should be made from chan-noy so that we maintain a consistent language between sections.

Some thoughts about site analysis....
From your observations during the groups presentation yesterday, what do you think happens when someone presents a site... ?
well i think that when doing so, one is able to orient the view and opinion of the audience, especially if the audience has never been on this site...
It makes the audience believe that the site is such or such - as we have seen yesterday, we can totally re-design a site by doing a site analysis presentation.
In short, you create stories, you create facts, depending on what you looked at, what you found interesting, etc.
And this is where it is specially interesting when developing a project - after all what we expect from you is a good understanding of a situation, but also your take on it, what you personally see, the potentials you can spot, the way you project this site...
So after finishing the group work, which should be a collective database that each of you is able to read and use for his/her project, you have to start taking your own way...
The site analysis will be extremely tied to your project. They will eventually become one....
So prepare your own project for Wednesday's tutorials by
- collecting the data which corresponds to your interest,
- sketching, and manipulating the sketches to add the data that is relevant to your idea.
As we said, sketches are not just pretty drawings, then need to tell you something... add annotations, different views, collages, etc. to them.
- writing
- modifying pictures
- finding references for inspiration

best wishes!
