the left one is the back side which the dark part shows where the handle comes out between the lock system. the lock overlaps each other in a shape of "U" letter one up side down and one normal side around the handle also the case can stretch up and down so they can go over the handle.
Leather seems a good idea. You should really consider making a sort of dress collection for this well-shaped pot. What other materials could react to heat and steam?
By the way, why not working with steam itself? You can think of a temporary container. The subject is open to interpretation and experimentation.
